What is a sump pump?

A sump pump is an important piece of waterproofing equipment found in some homes. Installed in the sump pit found at the lowest point of a basement or crawl space, it pumps away water from the base of the foundation. When water reaches a certain level in the sump pit, the pump motor kicks on and pumps the water away from your house and into a storm drain, dry well or detention pond.

Different types of sump pumps

When searching for a sump pump there are two pump designs: submersible and pedestal.

A submersible design has a waterproof housing with the pump located at the bottom and the outlet pipes at the top of the unit. These pumps are generally quieter and more desirable than pedestal pumps.

A pedestal pump has a top down design. The pump sits at the top of the unit with a pipe at the bottom of the pit. An outlet pipe runs from the bottom of the sump pit to the pump and then out to a designated drainage area.

Plumbers 911 can refer you to a plumbing contractor in your area, who has years of experience installing both variations of sump pumps.
