5 warning signs it’s time to replace your boiler

A boiler can be a powerful heating source that provides comfortable temperatures through the harshest of winters. But like any appliance, it has a limited lifespan. If it fails, you could face a severe and sudden heating emergency.

Don’t wait for your boiler to completely break down before you install a new one. Pay attention to these five warning signs that maybe it’s time to replace your boiler.

Even if boiler replacement is not immediately in your family budget, you should call a HVAC specialist for a more thorough inspection if you notice any of the following indications.

1. Your boiler is over 15 years old

Age is the number one reason to replace a boiler. The appliance will naturally experience wear and tear over time through regular use. The extreme heat of a boiler can warp critical components. Some parts for an older unit may no longer be in production. Any boiler older than 15 years should be inspected by a HVAC technician to see if it needs replacing.

2. Your boiler is no longer efficient

Pay close attention to your energy bill. Unexpectedly high gas bills could be a sign your boiler is acting up. If your boiler constantly needs more fuel than it once did, you should consider replacement.

Also be mindful of how quickly and thoroughly your boiler heats your home. An inefficient boiler could be caused by dirty, sludge-like water forming in the bottom. If your boiler struggles to heat your home, have it inspected by a HVAC specialist. He or she might recommend cleaning the water or installing a brand new boiler.

3. Your boiler shows signs of corrosion

Corrosion is one of the most obvious signs your boiler needs replacing. Modern boilers are corrosion resistant, but broken valves and leaks can cause corrosion. A reaction between the heat exchangers and boilers can also lead to rust problems.

Fortunately, a professional inspection should reveal signs of corrosion before it becomes a problem. That’s why we recommend having your boiler inspected by a HVAC specialist every year.

4. Your boiler makes strange noises

Boilers will make a reasonable amount of noise, but any loud bang or rattle indicates critical structural problems. Banging sounds are signs of pump failure. Loud humming sounds could indicate a faulty thermostat. Loud noises could also be a warning of a pressure blockage or a leak. If your boiler makes strange noises, have it inspected by a HVAC professional.

5. Your boiler is leaking

If you notice puddles of water around your boiler, call a HVAC professional. A leak often indicates serious trouble. As a boiler wears out from age, leaks are common. Sometimes they are fixable, but are usually a sign you’ll eventually need a new boiler. You’ll want to replace the boiler before it completely breaks and floods your property.
